| SHIPPING YOUR CAR IN A CONTAINER Whether your car will be professionally loaded (will cost you between $550.00 and $650.00) or you will make your own arrangements to load the car yourself. You must keep the following in mind when mixing personal effects and a car: • Personal effects go in first, followed by the bulk heading (building of a wall) of the car, and lastly the car. |
| • Keep in mind the
dimensions and linear space of the container, e.g. with a 20 ft. container
you can load up to 300 cuft. of personal effects followed by the car.
• With the 40 ft. container up to 1300 cuft. followed by the car. • With a 40 ft. high cube about 1650 cuft. followed by the car. • To fit more freight into a container along with a car, sometimes platforms are built over the car. This is especially true when shipping both household goods and a car. Building a platform requires so much skill and technique that it is best left to the shipping line warehouse professionals. |
| How to make the car
ready for shipping in a container • Rent a flatbed truck with a tilt-back so that the car will be picked up and slid into the container with the front end of the car facing the back of the container. • The gas line must be completely drained, and the vehicle's engine should be run until completely empty. • Battery disconnected and battery cables tied up with electrical tape. • Wheels blocked and properly chocked. • Axels above the wheels properly lashed with nylon rope to the bull rings on the floor of the container. • Finally the shipper must state in writing on a waiver - that is attached to the dock receipt - that the car has been made non-hazardous. |
